My home smells like dried fish and old people (With the exception of my room.), my karaoke song book just got thicker, and I've got enough brand new pairs of Third World underwear to win myself a foreigner groom in search of a mail order bride. Could life be any more sweeter than this? I think not.
Instead of me going to the Philippines this year, the Philippines brought itself to me -- my grandparents are home! It's been 7 or 8 years since I last saw them, and they're still the same awesome *Nanay and Tatay that I knew them, only...shorter and more arthritis affected than before. As expected, they've lost some of their English speaking ability but I'm so used to speaking to people with limited English speaking abilities that it's not even a big deal. My Nanay looked at my cellphone and noticed that I had Kwon Sang Woo's AND Daniel Henney's face on the LCD screens (haha yeah I have two LCD screens on my cellphone) and she asked, 'JEEN-RAH WHO EES DAT ON JORE CELLPONE, HA? WHOS DAT?' I was totally like, "They're my boyfriends Nanay!" And she believed me. 'WOW JEEN-RAH JORE BOYPRENZ ARE BERRY HENDSOME OOOH HENDSOME HENDSOME POR MY *GWUAPA GWUAPA GRANDDOTER!' Isn't that awesome, no one else but my grandmother would believe that I am dating hot sexy Asian models and/or celebrities. She sees past my mediocre single-girlness, I guess. And the fact that I am a nerdy 20yr old girl that keeps pictures of male celebrities on her phone, among other places. Yeah, okay you can stop laughing at me now. I had to tell her that I was, '*MAGKATAWA SIYA! JOKE ONLY JOKE ONLY NANAY!
* = In the Bisayan dialect of the Filipino language Nanay and Tatay (na-nai and ta-tai) means Mom and Dad and Lola and Lolo mean Grandma and Grandpa, but when I was little I could never call them Lola and Lolo because I would always hear my mom call them Nanay and Tatay and my brother and I would just copy her and it stuck. So we really call our grandparents...mom and dad. Which is okay because we don't call our own parents Nanay and Tatay. Just good ol' Mom and Dad. 'Gwuapa'= pretty. 'Magkatawa siya' = She laughs!/She's laughing!. My bisayan spelling might be way off though, haha.
ps. Dang, I'm slacking on reading through LJs...but only because I figured my whole friends page would be jam packed with 'OMG HARRY POTTER!' entries.

It's good that mostly everyone in Philippines understand English, so there snot communication barrier. But you might find some people's pronounciation not understanble but other than that...

Re: convert sinner
I CHOOSE PERISH! Don't nobody be speaking that shit in my family! No humongous pillows, just third world underwear and a new chip for the karaoke machine. My mom didn't buy much because you can find all that shit they have in the Philippines here.

so cute!! my cousin would call my grandma/pa (in korean, "halmuhni/halabuhji") "halmi/halbi" because he couldnt make out all the syllables.
ooh, i love grandparents!

what can brown do for you?
third world undies! that's hot!haha, reminds me of my mother. She comes home from Wal-Mart with a handful of $0.44 undies that I can use as sling shots.
oh! got a question for ya. my parents have a couple filipino friends who aren't genetically related to us, but they've known them and their family long enough that they refer to them as though they're related. and I end up referring to the parents as my aunt & uncle and their children as my cousins, but we're really not. do your parents do that?
